Where does this leave alcohol ?

    Alcohol is fine as long as it's not sweet. If it's sweet, like fortified or desert or luncheon wine or liqueurs, it's not ok as there's added sugar.
    So, dry wines, beers are ok as the sugar has turned into alcohol and in moderation of course.

    Basic rule of thumb if it tastes sweet more then likely it's still got sugar in it.  After you've been sugar free for some time, things that weren't sweet start tasting sweet and things that are sweet like most sweet wines are just unbearable so you actually prefer the reds and other dry wines.
