Just wondering if anyone who is new (or not) from New Zealand and would like to keep in contact to help each other along ..esp with finding foods that are good for us ..eg like i have found that Pams Pitta bread is just great for no sugars compared to other brands..I am on day 5 and have lost 1/2 kg not as fast as i would like but at least the scales are on the downward trend.Cheers

    Hi Kaye,

I started out on this voyage early in September 2010 after reading SP. I am 185cm tall and weighed 85kg with a waist of 104cm. I got down to 74kg and 94cm waist by about April 2011. Following a hernia repair operation in November I've put on a few kg and cm; now 77kg and 97cm. Not sure why as my diet hasn't changed much. David's advice is to go low-carb for a while but I am having a bit of trouble motivating myself to do that. My wife does the cooking and I don't know how she'd feel about it.

    It's called a change of lifestyle . .  not a diet :-)

Also I heard some refer to the Dukan Diet (low-carb with a buddy system). I checked it from curiosity and found a questionnaire on the front page. It told me that 77kg was my ideal weight! So now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just accept that. My waist is my main concern as ALL men should keep it under 94cm (80cm for women) to avoid the dangerous accumulation of fat around the vital organs.

David says "party food is for parties". So it's OK to eat a bit of rubbish at a party as long as it doesn't set you back on the road to perdition :-(  You are wise to abstain in the early stages.

You can get a huge variety of food without including fructose in it. As I read recently . . " eat the sort of food your grandmother used to cook; not the sort your mother bought from the supermarket shelves". So simple, unprocessed,  food, like raw vegetables (make great salads), cereals, and glucose-based versions of all the stuff you used to eat. Since you are subscribing to this web site you can see the recipes David and his wife have devised.

If you get tired of waiting for SSP & SPQP you can download them as ebooks from Penguin [ http://www.penguin.com.au/ebooks ] and Amazon.  [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=sweet+poison&x=18&y=21 ]

Where are you from in Godzone?  I was  born-&-bred in Dunedin but left there in 1956. I have lived most of my adult life in NSW and on the Mid-North Coast for the last 12 years or so. Three children (plus one stepson) and a total of 14 grandchildren, all in NSW  and Queensland. Lots of relos in N.Z., especially around  Christchurch and Invercargill.

If you need a morale boost look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM  Professor Robert Lustig of the University of California spelling out the evils of fructose in great detail, and quite entertainingly.

I wish you well in your journey to health and happiness.

Correction - you can't buy the books from Penguin. Probably the best place to buy ebooks is Booktopia  http://www.booktopia.com.au/ You need to have a Google Account linked to Booktopia to buy from them. But once set up it's a quick download and you can then read it on your compute.

I just bought Big Fat Lies that way. $20.00.

Awesome info John..you have so  done great  ..I really hope I can be as good as you....

... I was born and bred in Christchurch..then having lived in Wellington and then Ashbuton we have now lived in Akaroa for just over 20 yr and love it ..Have two children and 1 granchild ..quite sad realy as my two don't seem to be the breeding sorts..My son and grandaughter live in Auckland and my other Daughter lives in Brisbane.. I really need to lose some weight (10kgs) before August a the daughter is getting married in Rarotonga so want to feel good for that ..I have been very unactive for the past couple of years due to leg problems and heart.so weight creeped up..I still can't exercise like I use to but am starting to walk a wee bit each day .I think I will try the no carbs for a while apart from having 1 pitta bread for breakfast as I have meds that i need to take with food and the thought of eggs bacon at that time does nothing for me.. . Tis as you say just finding what works so my plan of attack isvery little carbs up to lunch time them carb free after that starting today...have weighed in at 76.6 so I am hoping by this time next week it would have dropped a bit..lol tehe if I haven,t signed into this thread then you know I have gone off the rails...lol...Have a good day ..Cheers Kaye

Hi Kaye, we are in Chch!  Just started sugar free last Tuesday so have been going a week.  We have cut ALL sugar out and are staying as close to earth food as possible, (ie. fresh vegies, no sauces, just fresh herbs) seems to be doing the trick alright, we are both noticing our fatty bits are shrinking. We are going to stick with that for a few more weeks and see how it goes. I am feeling the same as you, don't even miss the sweet stuff (maybe that's yet to come?) my husband however has found it hard to give up the girl guide biscuits so he's just cut back to 2 a day - bad timing ay but he has just about run out.   All the best, I hope it goes well for you and you feel fantastic at the wedding! Kaye - the lack of exercise is not what caused you to put on weight . .  it was the fructose you were eating.. There are many good reasons to exercise, but losing weight is not one of them. Think about this . .  one hour of heavy workout will shed about 800 calories. One  minute of consuming a mars bar will put it all back on!

Once your appetite-control system is working again, you will only want to eat what your body needs at that time . . . carbs, fat, alcohol, whatever.

While you are waiting for the book (which?) to arrive, I suggest you do a Google search for some of David's interviews. Also check out his blog at http://www.raisin-hell.com/

Please let me  know if you have any difficulties with this.
