As for parties, having a 'little something' can start the cravings, so if you feel you need to, just look for things that are likely to be low sugar. For example, a cream bun is a bread roll with cream in it. Unless they put sugar in the cream, the jam is your only major worry ( yes, there's tiny amounts of sugar in the roll, but we're talking about making the most of it, overall, it's going to be less sugar than a white chocolate cheese cake, say )
