I am in my 7th week now and recently bought some no added sugar carob buds from the health food store, after reading some suggestions in Sarah Wilsons e-book "I quit sugar".  The ingredients list does not include any form of sugar, however the nutritional panel shows the sugar content to be 40%.  Can anyone enlighten me? Should I not eat these afterall?

    Thanks.

It was very hard finding out about the sugars in carob. But this is what I found, below.  So it's about 38% sucrose or 20+% fructose. Better give it a miss :-( There are a lot of types of carob used in food and agri-businesses. But this seems to refer to the carob seed.

"No added sugar"  always sounds like a con to me. You need to see just how much sugar is there and what sort of sugar it is.  The Golden Rule is to reject anything over 2% sugars except yoghurt (& maybe other dairy products?), 5%, because that's lactose and it's kosher.

    The average proximate composition of raw carob pods was 8.17 – 9.56% moisture, 89.57 – 91.12% carbohydrates, 40.69 – 54.74% total sugars (33.70 – 45.09% sucrose, 1.79 – 4.95% glucose and 1.80 – 5.19% fructose), 29.88 – 36.07% dietary fibre, 3.07 – 4.42% protein, 2.58 – 3.08% polyphenols, 0.45 – 0.86% fat and 2.13 – 2.69% ash.
