Hi, I just saw a product advertised on T.V. last night called Stevia. It is a natural product (that's how it was promoted) that can used instead of sugar. Does anyone know anything about this product?

According to David it's in the "Your Call" category . . . . . SPQP page 170. The theory is that once you are over withdrawal you won't crave sweet tasting stuff any more.. It  is so for me most of the time. But I still don't like coffee without it. I use "Splenda" , which many people don't approve of. But it amounts to one little tablet a day so I think I can live with that.  All those listed as "unsafe" in SPQP  are best avoided.

It's a good idea to take a copy of this list as well as the list of sugars on Page 55 with you when shopping as the names of the goodies and the baddies often sound/look much the same.

I've used it once, and found it is indeed a lot sweeter than sugar - I had to order dextrose in the mail as no-one has it locally and in the meantime, I bought it for a cake.  Apart from anything else, it's very expensive, enough to make a cheese cake was $8.

There is a new product on the market, I think it has been around for awhile now. It is called Natvia.100% natural, it is Aspartame, saccharin and Sucralose free. Has no artificial flavours. Comes from the Stevia plant, looks like sugar. I bought it for cooking, and can't taste the difference. Though once you cut out the sugar, you don't miss it, though it would be a good alternative while cutting back. It is also an all Australian product. My husband still has sugar, and I put it in his coffee to see if he noticed the difference, and he didn't. There is no after taste as there is with some of the other alternatives. I found it in the sugar section in my local supermarket. Though not all seem to stock it, had to look out for it when I first went looking for it.

Yes, that is also Stevia.  I agree with BFL on this - I'll eat it from time to time, but humans have not been eating it long enough to know if it's really safe, long term.
