Can anyone recommend any safe options for eating out in a Thai restaurant?  I'm not terribly into chilli or coriander either, but am just getting my head around this whole sugar free thing? And not sure About the bases they use for their sauces....but would still like to fell part of a girls night out, and not having to eat at home before I go... Any advice appreciated...

Well, anything not in a sauce, really, most thai sauces will have sugar in them.  Having said that, seriously, if you don't eat a TON of food, and you end up eating a little sugar, it's not like the world will explode.  I went to my mother in law's 60th last night, and while I tried to be sensible, I didn't interrogate the waiter and I am sure I ate sugar.  Today, I am off sugar again, and I am certain that so long as it's a once in a while thing, my body can handle it.  I had to travel across the US for three weeks, and was surprised that I kept losing weight despite having dessert a few times here and there.  I'm sure it would catch up with me if I ate that much sugar regularly, but, it's my experience that if you're stuck, there's no need to be a pariah, just do the best you can and get serious again the next day.

The caveat is, if you start to eat sugar every day or two using what I just said as an excuse, then you're going to end up paying the price.  The downside for me was not so much weight gain, as being addicted again and having to battle through cravings to get completely sugar free again.  I'm doing it (I was sugar free for a week before last night and am being EXTRA careful now there's no events on the horizon that might trip me up, I want to get in to the zone again ASAP ), but it would have been easier if I'd not had to travel, or if I'd been able to stay completely off sugar while I was away.

To quote our worthy leader "Party food is for parties". :-)

agreed party food is for parties, but most of the sauces would have sugar in them, although I don't think it would contain much fructose though.  Just keep the rest of the day pretty low in fructose and the following day go back to no sugar and you will be fine.  You may experience a few slight reactions from the sugar though.

Not sure how that would work.  Sweet chilli sauce is 50% sugar, therefore, 25% fructose.

To go back to the original question, about Thai food: our favourite Thai restaurant does some very nice curries which are clearly not based on sweetened sauce. If in doubt remember David's advice to use your tastebuds and decide for yourself if it seems sweet. And rice is always ok!

Maybe you can read th restaurant's menu online before you go so you can plan your order?  Even ring them up and ask?

Thanks all for the words of advice. I ended up eating at home before I went, lasagne and salad with the family, then had a cup of tea with the girls... I'm only on day 4, and have come this far, so didn't already want to start making 'allowances' for having sugar... Would rather be saftely through withdrawal before I take risks.... It's still early days!

That sounds like the sensible option, especially early on.
