Given information in the latest book Big Fat Lies regarding polyunsatuarated fats can anyone tell me if the spray on oils used in cooking are as harmful, or can anyone suggest a brand that isnt as harmful?

The brand is irrelevant.  You can buy spray on olive oil if you must ( although it's a huge waste of money, it's cheaper to buy olive oil ).

That's true but olive oil is no good for high-temperature cooking.
Also, for normal bacon etc the amount of polyunsaturated fat you use on any one occasion is so small as to be inconsequential.  Page 225 of BFL shows the good & bad seed oils.

OK - I don't do any deep frying ( I know I CAN, but it still seems healthier to NOT ).  To be honest, if I had just bacon, I wouldn't use any oil at all, enough fat comes out of the bacon.  I don't really cook bacon though, I use proscuitto, which is much nicer and the slicers are much thinner so I eat less, and still feel full.  It does need something to fry in, I use a little butter.

for xmas I got the best set of non stick fry pans so I don't actually use any oils while cooking at all, I don't really cook in oil or butter much.  Olive oil is not good for high temp cooking and I do actually have a can of canola spray at home I mainly only ever use it for baking and spraying my cake tins, when using butter I've found things still stick although in saying this I do need new cake tins.

    Hi EVERYONE,
Just to say..You can actually buy little bottles that you can put whatever oil - or any fluid you lik ein...and you pump it up so that the increased internal pressure turns it into a spray ...My eldest daughter gave me one for christmas - and I have since bought another for salad dressings - just because I like it very lightly applied - but it now seems to be a great idea because it also puts me in charge of exactly what goes in the gobbo...

    Cheers

I used both canola and olive oil spray until I read BFL and also read the "ingredients" on the cans. I got rid of them and only use liquids now. I will get one of those little spray bottles for when I want to lightly add oil to salad, etc. I used macadamia oil, too, as that can be used for high temp. I use it to cook my popcorn. *grin* And I don't know what bacon has to do with the original question, but I certainly don't add oil to the pan to cook bacon. It does create it's on non stick surface once it gets going.

In fact, after you cook bacon, you have bacon fat in the pan that can be used again to cook other things if you want.  I cook my mushrooms in it, sometimes and it's as nice as using butter, I think.
