Hi David, I was just wondering what the go is with vegetables? Are they basically sugar free or not?

Pretty Much ... just putting the finishing touches to a guide to vegetables ... will put it up in the next day or so ... The worst 4 in terms of sugar content are Beetroot, Pea, Carrot and Rhubarb (all around 3% fructose).  The best four are Avocado, Spinach, Potato and Lettuce (all less than .5%) ... but because of the fibre content, there's really no such thing as a bad vegetable!

    Cheers

Hi Dinah, how are you going?  Last night I had hot chocolate (with marshmallows!) and a biscuit.  And actually didn't even enjoy it that much - grumble grumble.  At least by not enjoying it, it should be easier to say no next time!  And now David's vegetable guide shows that beetroot is full of sugar - I should have guessed of course cause I love it!  Although come to think of it, I haven't eaten beetroot since I cut out sugar so I probably won't like it that much now...

Hi Terri, I am going really well actually. Not really missing the sugar much at all. Finding it quite easy to resist the birthday cakes at work (seems to have been a succession of them lately) Went out to dinner tonight and had an entree and a main. No problems avoiding dessert. I had an orange the other day and it seemed almost TOO sweet! I made some of the choclate fudge squares from the recipe section. They are really good and quite sweet enough. But it's really strange as I have only had a couple of them! I certainly haven't lost any weight though because I am still eating heaps but I do think my appetitte controls may be kicking back in. Let's hope so. I do miss having sugar in coffee but fortunately I have never taken it in tea. I am pretty determined to keep on the straight and narrow for the rest of the month and see how i feel. How about you? Have you lost weight? Do you want to?

    Cheers

Hi again, I have been finding it really hard over the last few days. Craving something sweet, particularly chocolate!!! But I haven't given in. I do wonder if my cycle has a bearing on the cravings. I've also been a bit down about the fact I haven't lost any weight. I know that's not really the aim but I suppose secretly it really is! LOL!!! The trouble is when I have craving for sweetness I eat heaps to compensate. But I will persevere. I do feel better for it, that's for sure. And when i think back on all the cakes, biscuits and sweets I have NOT eaten, it has to be good thing surely! Love to hear how everyone else is going. Cheers

Dinah - it sounds to me like you are getting to the end of withdrawal ... I'd stick with what you're doing for a while and just see how you go.  Don't worry about the weight.  You didn't put it on overnight and you won't lose it overnight either.

    Keep us posted :-)

    Cheers

    David.

Hi Dinah.  Oh yes, I would dearly love to lose some weight, 10 kgs straight away would be great!  But unfortunately I'm getting heavier!  I'm blaming hormones too - I'm not even enjoying sweet stuff but have this weird idea that it will make me feel better.  So now I have to get off the comfort food eating cycle.  At the moment I'm feeling a bit stressed, so hoping I will be back on the straight and narrow once things settle down but right now I'm triple F - fat and flabby and over fifty!

    Ladies,

One thing that quite a few folks of the female persuasion have told me is that they find it more difficult to go cold turkey than their men-folk.  Some of them have very successfully become unaddicted by slowly ratcheting down the sugar over an extended period.  They recommend you total up your daily sugar intake, record it in a diary and then week by week (or day by day if you can stand it) eliminate one thing from it (being careful not to replace it) - for example today you decide that from now on you will have 1 teaspoon of sugar rather than 2 in your tea.  Then they record the change in their diary and make sure they stick to it.

This of course will make the process of withdrawal much slower.  But its better than not being able to do it at all.  I liken it to the difference between my approach to entering a cold body of water and the approach my wife takes.  She goes in one painful inch at a time, but I just jump in - prefering it to be over.  The slower approach might be easier to stick to?

    Cheers

    David.

Thanks David.  Maybe slow and sure is the way for me to go, so I will take your advice and try again! Cheers, Terri
